PorMEH3

The Portland, Maine Hash House Harriers (PorMEH3) host a trail most weekends, the date, time, and start location are all set by that week’s hare, and can be found in the event details.

PorME trails tend to be 3-5 miles in distance, unless otherwise posted. Trails typically include multiple stops for beer, other adult beverages, and silly revelry along the way. Only the hare knows where the trail will end. The adventure is trying to figure it all out together with the rest of the pack.

There is no need to be a fast runner, in fact there is often a contingent of walkers on weekend trails. Plus the fast wankers will find all the false trail so you can catch up. Just come thirsty for adventure and cheap beer.

Knightvillain H3

Knightvillain H3 is the Thursday night splinter-cell of the Portland Hashers. There is a run every Thursday evening (except Thanksgiving) usually starting in the hare’s backyard or at one of our favorite bars.

Our Thursday trails aim to be about 3 miles long, don’t usually have any stops in the middle, and mostly end in the same spot where they started (A to A).

Since there are no stops in the middle, the trails go a bit faster, but remain non-competitive and open to drinkers of all abilities.

A brief introduction to “hashing”

The Hash House Harriers is an international “drinking club with a running problem” founded in Kuala Lumpur (now Malaysia) by a group of British ExPats and named after the “Hash House” or cheap pub where their adventures usually started.

Each event is a Hounds and Hares game known as a “hash” that begins with a bit of pre-lubrication drinking at a pub. The leader (hare) leaves pre-lube early and marks a trail to be followed by everyone else (hounds) after they’ve finished their drinks. The hares deliberately lay false or misleading trail which ensures the fastest runners end up doubling back, while the slower members have a chance to catch up. Trails end with a traditional “circle” featuring bawdy songs, beer, liquor, and a general revelry that might be familiar to rugby and soccer fans.

Want to run your first hash?

  • Find a trail on the Upcoming Events page and RSVP so the hares know you’re coming.
  • Wear shoes you don’t mind wrecking. Trails can go through mud, water, and all sorts of shiggy.
  • Hash cash: Virgins (first timers) typically drink free, but usually hash cash is $5 or $10, sometimes more for big events like our summer Prom.
  • Bring: ID and cash or card. Headlamp and reflective gear at night.
